Harnessing the Desert Landscape as a Healing Force

University of Arizona Cancer Center – North Campus

Tucson, AZ

The national award-winning Peter and Paula Fasseas Cancer Clinic provides examination and infusion treatment services in a convenient, accessible outpatient facility. The design reuses portions of the foundation and steel frame of an existing 50-year-old hospital on the site, but reinvents the elements as a series of linked pavilions and courtyards with garden, desert and mountain views.

The architecture incorporates abundant daylight and vistas to mountain ranges, gardens and trees. A natural arroyo and healing gardens replicating elements of the native landscape provide a sense of beauty and calm. Program elements also include conference and counseling space, pharmacy, laboratory, staff workspace, and amenities including a resource library and café.
