The new home for the Rutgers School of Medicine will represent Rutgers Health's core values and mission to educate future physicians and caregivers alongside researchers to support bench-to-bedside discoveries. Located at the New Jersey Health + Life Sciences Exchange (HELIX), the medical school is part of the first phase of development and spans four floors in the H-1 building. This relocation will consolidate medical school programs into a vibrant hub for innovation – a significant change from its current suburban location. CO Architects is working on this project in collaboration with Elkus Manfredi Architects.

Program spaces will include a central forum, simulation center, clinical skills suite, virtual and traditional anatomy, flexible classrooms, a 400-seat multipurpose room, faculty offices, and seminar rooms. An abundance of amenity spaces will support student health and provide respite from the rigors of medical education. These spaces include wellness rooms, a meditation room, a student lounge, a library and both quiet and group study areas.

HELIX is planned as a center for innovation, providing companies, universities, and researchers with cutting-edge spaces to work, learn, research and connect. The H-1 building will provide expansive first-floor retail space with cafes, restaurants and shopping, four levels of translational research (including a full-floor vivarium) administrative space and chancellor’s offices, and three levels of co-working space.

“Rutgers Health at the HELIX will transform and affirm to the world the core value of Rutgers’ research and medical education enterprise.”
